Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, and see which words you use most.
Up to 500,000 characters. Your text never leaves your device: everything is counted in your browser.
How it works
The counter reports words, characters, sentences and paragraphs for any text you type or paste, and updates the numbers on every keystroke.
Words. The text is split with the browser's Intl.Segmenter, which applies the Unicode word-boundary rules (UAX #29) instead of cutting at every space. A segment counts as a word when it is made of letters or digits; punctuation and emoji are not words. In practice this means an apostrophe inside a word keeps it whole, a hyphen splits it, a number with a decimal point or thousands separator stays one word, and a web address breaks into several words.
Characters. Counted as what a reader sees as one character (a grapheme), not as bytes or code units. Spaces and line breaks are included in the first figure and left out of the second.
Sentences. Estimated from Unicode sentence boundaries. A line break ends a sentence even without a full stop, and abbreviations such as "Dr." are not recognized, so "Dr. Smith arrived." can be counted as two sentences.
Paragraphs. Blocks of text separated by at least one empty line. A single line break stays inside the same paragraph.
Reading time. Word count divided by 238 words per minute, rounded to whole seconds: 238 words show as 1 min 0 sec, 500 words as 2 min 6 sec, 1,000 words as 4 min 12 sec.
Most frequent words. Up to ten words, ranked by how often they occur. A word must have at least three letters and appear at least twice to be listed, and its share is the occurrences divided by the total word count.
Examples
What counts as a word
| Text | Words | Why |
|---|---|---|
| It's an e-mail from Ankara's office. | 7 | "It's" and "Ankara's" stay whole; "e-mail" is two words |
| Visit https://example.com/about today | 5 | https, example.com, about, plus Visit and today |
| Pi is 3.14 and a thousand is 1,234. | 8 | Numbers count; "3.14" and "1,234" are one word each |
| Great job 👍 see you soon! | 5 | The emoji and the exclamation mark are not words |
What counts as a character
| Text | Characters | Without spaces |
|---|---|---|
| The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. | 44 | 36 |
| Great job 👍 see you soon! | 25 | 20 |
| 👨👩👧 | 1 | 1 |
The family emoji in the last row is one character on screen but 8 units in JavaScript's string.length, because it is three emoji joined by invisible connectors. A counter based on length would report 8.
Sentences and paragraphs. This text has 6 words, 3 sentences and 2 paragraphs:
First line.
Second line.
New paragraph.
Most frequent words. In "Read the book. Read the book again, then read the book once more." (13 words), the list is book (3, about 23.1%), read (3, about 23.1%) and the (3, about 23.1%), tied counts sorted alphabetically. Words used only once are left out. Note that "the" is listed: common words are not filtered out.
Things to watch for
- The sentence count is an estimate. Abbreviations and initials can add sentences, and a list without full stops adds one per line. Use it as a rough figure, not an exact one.
- Check hard limits against the right program. Totals differ between counters on hyphenated words, URLs and numbers. When an application, form or assignment has a strict limit, confirm the final number in the program that will enforce it.
- Reading time is an average. The 238 words per minute figure comes from English non-fiction studies. It is applied to every language here without adjustment, and individual speed, text difficulty and screen versus paper all move it.
- Frequent words are not filtered. Articles, conjunctions and other common words appear in the list when they pass the length and frequency thresholds. The table shows repetition in your text; this tool does not define a target density.
- The page language sets the casing rules. Words are lower-cased according to the language of the page, so a Turkish text counted here can list "İstanbul" and "istanbul" as separate entries. For Turkish text, use the Turkish version of this page, which applies Turkish casing (I becomes ı, İ becomes i).
- Limit. Texts longer than 500,000 characters are rejected with an error rather than counted partially.
- Everything runs in your browser. The text is not sent to a server and is not stored.
